Certify the Right Academic Evidence

A true copy, confirmation of an award and an apostille answer different questions. Work backwards from the recipient's wording.

Who this guide is for

  • UK graduates submitting qualifications abroad
  • Applicants asked for certified degrees, transcripts or award verification
  • People comparing a certified paper copy with an eligible electronic route

The practical problem

GOV.UK lists qualification certificates among documents that can be legalised after certification by a UK public official such as a notary or solicitor. That is different from its broad general guidance on who may certify a copy for an ordinary application. A professional who is acceptable to one recipient is not automatically suitable for UK legalisation. Certification that a copy matches an original also differs from verification of the award with the university. An apostille on a certifier's act does not itself confirm academic equivalence, professional licensing or the recipient's acceptance of the qualification.

Your options

Step 1: Separate the requested evidence

Ask whether the recipient needs the degree certificate, transcript, award-confirmation letter, direct university verification or a combination. Record the issuing institution and exact award name. Do not substitute a transcript for a degree merely because both show the graduate's name.

Step 2: Specify the certification act

Confirm original or copy, whether a UK solicitor or notary is required, and the exact wording. Ask whether the certifier must inspect the original or verify the award with the institution. General true-copy wording is not a substitute for an express verification requirement.

Step 3: Choose the legalisation format

For a suitable electronic route, the PDF must be electronically signed by a UK notary or solicitor and fit the recipient's submission method. For paper, confirm which certified document is sent and returned. Do not link the catalogue's standard US online-notarisation service as though it supplies this UK certification.

Step 4: Reconcile and hand over

Check names, award title, institution, dates, pages and attached certification before submission. Hypothetical example: an employer asks for an apostilled degree and direct university confirmation. A certified copy plus apostille addresses one part; obtain instructions for the separate university confirmation instead of claiming the apostille verifies the award.

Documents typically needed

  • Recipient wording on degree, transcript, verification and certifier status
  • Institution, award name, issue format and whether the original is available
  • Any direct verification instructions supplied by the institution or recipient
  • Destination language, attachment order and electronic or paper submission method
  • Private academic and identity documents only in the secure dashboard after review

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Confusing copy fidelity with university award verification
  • Using a general copy certifier without checking UK legalisation suitability
  • Assuming a US remote notarial seal meets a UK certification requirement
  • Apostilling the wrong academic document
  • Promising academic equivalence or professional recognition

How Nomadic Go helps

Start with a non-sensitive description of the issuer, document type, destination and recipient requirement. Nomadic Go can review whether an agreed supported document route is available and prepare an itemised quote before payment; this page does not approve a supplier, replacement-document service or particular application. The authority issues the apostille. Issuer fees, certification prerequisites, authority charges, translation and courier are separate unless expressly included in the reviewed quote. Routine approved certified-copy costs remain governed by the catalogue and accepted quote. Do not put certificates, identity documents or criminal-history information in public forms. Private documents belong only in the secure dashboard after a reviewed request. Acceptance and delivery times are not guaranteed. This is practical preparation information, not legal or tax advice.

Important limitations: Nomadic Go provides assistance and coordination services only. We do not guarantee approval of any bank account, visa, or company registration application. All final decisions rest with the relevant bank, government authority, or regulatory body. We do not provide tax advice, legal opinions, or financial advice.

Frequently asked questions

Does the apostille prove that my degree is genuine?

It concerns the qualifying signature, stamp or seal. If the recipient needs direct confirmation of the award, arrange that separate check with the institution and appropriate certifier; do not infer it from the apostille alone.

Can my degree use an e-Apostille?

A suitable qualification document may use the electronic route after the required UK notary or solicitor digital certification. Eligibility and recipient submission requirements must be reviewed. A scan alone is insufficient.

Should I send my original degree overseas?

First ask whether the recipient accepts the required certified copy. If an original is necessary, confirm the return arrangements and physical handover before dispatch.
