Frequently asked questions

How long can I stay in South Africa without a visa?

Most Western nationalities (USA, UK, EU, Canada, Australia) can stay in South Africa for up to 90 days per visit on a free visitor's permit. After 90 days you must exit and re-enter. For stays longer than 90 days, a formal long-stay visa (Critical Skills, business, or retired persons visa) is required. We assess the best option for your nationality and situation.

What is South Africa's Critical Skills Visa?

South Africa's Critical Skills Visa allows qualifying professionals in shortage occupations (including IT, engineering, architecture, finance, and healthcare) to work legally in South Africa. It grants an initial 3-year visa, renewable. As a Critical Skills visa holder you can also apply for permanent residency after 5 years. We assess your profession against the Critical Skills list during onboarding.

How safe is Cape Town for digital nomads?

Cape Town has a dual reputation: the city bowl, Atlantic seaboard, Southern Suburbs, and Winelands are considered safe and have active nomad communities. Certain areas of the Cape Flats and outer townships have higher crime rates. Most nomads who research safe neighbourhoods and take standard urban precautions report positive experiences. We provide neighbourhood guidance as part of our Cape Town orientation service.

Can I open a South African bank account as a foreigner?

Yes. Most South African banks (Standard Bank, FNB, Absa, Nedbank, Capitec) allow non-residents to open accounts with a valid South African visa, proof of address, and passport. Digital banks (Tymebank, Discovery Bank) may have simpler requirements. We coordinate the account opening process as part of our Cape Town nomad hub service.
