Portugal NHR Tax Regime

Portugal's Non-Habitual Resident (NHR) Status Explained

Portugal's NHR regime offered a 10-year flat tax rate for qualifying foreign income. The original NHR regime closed to new applications at the end of 2023, but a successor program (IFICI/NHR 2.0) opened in 2024 for specific categories of high-value professionals and entrepreneurs.

Frequently asked questions

Is the original NHR still available?

The original NHR regime closed to new applications on 31 December 2023. A successor program called IFICI (Incentivo Fiscal a Internacionalizacao e Colaboradores da Industria) launched in 2024 and is sometimes called NHR 2.0. It targets different categories than the original NHR. Consult a licensed Portuguese tax advisor to assess your eligibility for IFICI.

Do you provide tax advice on NHR or IFICI?

No. We do not provide tax advice of any kind. We assist with the structural and administrative elements: company formation, banking, and NIF registration. For the tax analysis and IFICI application, you must work with a licensed Portuguese tax advisor or gestor.

What is a Portuguese NIF and do I need one?

The NIF (Numero de Identificacao Fiscal) is Portugal's tax identification number. You need a NIF to open a Portuguese bank account, sign a lease, buy property, and for virtually any official interaction in Portugal. We assist with NIF registration as part of your setup.

Can I combine Portuguese residency with a company in another jurisdiction?

Many expats combine Portuguese personal residency with a company in another jurisdiction (e.g. an Estonian OU or UK Ltd) for income structuring purposes. The tax implications are highly specific to your situation and require advice from a Portuguese international tax specialist. We assist with the non-tax structural and administrative elements.
