GS1 and Amazon: GTIN Setup Is Not Marketplace Approval
Verify the exact product and identifier route before buying numbers or printing packaging. Amazon decides whether and how it can be listed.

Who this guide is for
- Brand owners launching an identified product on Amazon
- Resellers looking for the manufacturer's existing identifier
- Teams investigating mismatched product data or a rejected listing
- Sellers comparing a platform exemption with a reusable GS1 identifier
The practical problem
GS1 allocation identifies a trade item; marketplace listing is a separate commercial and policy decision. Amazon distinguishes GTINs from its ASIN catalogue identifiers and a seller's internal SKUs. A barcode image alone establishes neither legitimate number allocation nor marketplace acceptance. GS1's Amazon guidance says most Amazon product categories require GS1 GTINs, but Amazon also describes matching an offer to an existing product and possible GTIN exemptions. Do not convert that into 'every Amazon product always needs a new number' or 'a GS1 licence guarantees approval'. Determine whether you are reselling an unchanged product, creating a genuinely new product or changing an existing trade item before choosing a route.
Your options
1. Find the existing product before creating a new identity
Check the exact packaging and ask the manufacturer for the GTIN if you source an existing product. Amazon's public guide describes searching Add Products by product ID to match an offer to an existing listing. Verify brand, model, variant, pack count and packaging level before matching; a similar item is not the same trade item. Do not buy your own new number merely because you are a new reseller of the unchanged product.
2. For a new owned product, establish issuer and owner data
If you create and own a new product without a GTIN, Amazon directs sellers to GS1. Identify the legal business, brand owner, country route, product attributes and packaging hierarchy. Compare one eligible variant with a prefix route based on actual identifier needs. Keep licence evidence and allocated product data together. A random image generator, unexplained resale number or another product's GTIN cannot substitute for this review.
3. Check the intended marketplace's current category workflow
Record the Amazon marketplace, category, product ID field and any current eligibility or approval request shown in Seller Central. Amazon's public guide describes a possible exemption for a product that cannot be matched to an existing listing: the new-listing workflow may show an application option after selecting that you have no product ID. It calls for the product name/title and images of all sides of the product and packaging. Eligibility is not universal and approval belongs to Amazon; a platform exemption does not issue a GS1 number or settle other retailers' requirements.
4. Diagnose a rejection before changing or replacing the GTIN
Preserve the precise error and compare the number, licence holder, brand and product attributes against the item being listed. GS1 flags using another product's number or random duplicate numbers as catalogue risks. If issuer data is wrong, ask the relevant GS1 organisation about correction. If the identifier is correct but Amazon rejects the listing or asks for category evidence, use Amazon's support and policy routes. Do not keep allocating numbers as a workaround or claim an ASIN has become invalid simply because a GTIN changed.
Hypothetical example: a reseller and a new physical three-pack
A fictional seller resells an unchanged manufacturer's single bottle and also plans its own physical three-pack. It first obtains and verifies the manufacturer's single-bottle identifier, then checks whether a matching Amazon listing exists. It records the three-pack as a separate proposed trade item and reviews allocation, brand responsibility and channel rules before setup. The single bottle's code is not assumed suitable for the pack. Neither the availability of a code nor this preparation guarantees listing acceptance.
Hypothetical example: the identifier is valid but the listing is held
A fictional brand's GS1 record correctly identifies its 250 ml product, yet Amazon requests further category evidence. The team retains its issuer evidence and exact notice, checks the listing data for discrepancies and follows the platform's request. It does not purchase another GTIN to escape the review. The example illustrates why issuer evidence, product compliance and marketplace permission are separate, without predicting a result.
Documents typically needed
- Checklist: legal owner, brand owner, country route and current GS1 licence/identifier evidence, if any
- Checklist: exact product, model, variant, declared content, pack count and packaging level
- Checklist: target Amazon marketplace/category, existing matching listing or ASIN, current ID-field requirement and exact error
- Checklist: manufacturer-supplied GTIN for sourced products, reconciled with packaging and product data
- Checklist: proposed new-product matrix and current channel requirements before selecting single-GTIN or prefix capacity
- Privacy: keep account screenshots, licence evidence and private business files out of public enquiries. Nomadic files use only the secure dashboard after a reviewed request; submit any Amazon verification evidence through official Amazon channels.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Licensing a new identifier for an unchanged product merely because its reseller changed
- Confusing ASIN, internal SKU, GTIN and barcode artwork
- Using a consumer-unit identifier for a different physical multipack
- Assuming a GTIN exemption applies to every brand, category, market or retailer
- Changing a number to bypass a category review
- Treating issuer licence fees as inclusive of professional setup or marketplace charges
How Nomadic Go helps
Request a reviewed quote with the product, variant count, packaging levels and intended channel described without attaching private files. The Single GTIN service remains one eligible variant; the Company Prefix service remains one suitable business route and up to the first ten eligible identifiers. Eligibility and capacity need confirmation before payment. Professional setup fees, issuer licence charges and future issuer renewals are separate; the guide does not change catalogue fees or availability. Packaging design, printing, laboratory testing, product approval, Amazon account work and guaranteed marketplace listing are not promised inclusions. An exemption application or rejected-listing appeal is not assumed included. GS1 and Amazon control their own decisions; there is no guaranteed timing and this is not tax or legal advice.
Important limitations: Nomadic Go provides assistance and coordination services only. We do not guarantee approval of any bank account, visa, or company registration application. All final decisions rest with the relevant bank, government authority, or regulatory body. We do not provide tax advice, legal opinions, or financial advice.
Frequently asked questions
Does an official GS1 GTIN guarantee an Amazon listing?
No. GS1 explicitly separates technical allocation from product listing. Amazon controls catalogue matching, exemption decisions and its current category and seller requirements.
Is an ASIN a replacement for a GTIN outside Amazon?
No. Amazon describes an ASIN as an identifier in its own catalogue. A GS1 GTIN identifies the trade item across supply-chain channels; your internal SKU serves another purpose.
Do I need to buy a new GTIN to resell an existing product?
Not merely because you are a new seller. Check the manufacturer's existing identifier and match the exact product. A changed product or physical pack needs a separate standards and channel review.
Can I list without a GTIN?
Amazon's public guide describes matching an offer to an existing product and possible exemption applications for eligible new listings. Follow the current marketplace/category workflow; an exemption is neither guaranteed nor a GS1 allocation.
Does changing a GTIN automatically create a new listing?
No. GS1 says a new GTIN does not automatically imply a new listing. Notify the channel of accurate product data and follow its catalogue process.
