Who this is for

  • Non-EU remote workers planning to relocate to Lisbon or Porto
  • Nomads who want a European base with a pathway to EU permanent residency
  • Those interested in Portugal's tax regime for new residents (IFICI/NHR 2.0)
  • Entrepreneurs seeking a Schengen base with access to the EU single market

Lisbon has become one of Europe's leading digital nomad cities, combining Atlantic coastline, affordable (by Western European standards) cost of living, excellent English proficiency, and a welcoming expat scene. Portugal's D8 Digital Nomad Visa makes it one of the most accessible European residency options for remote workers. Note: the original NHR tax regime closed to new applicants in 2024 - a successor programme (IFICI/NHR 2.0) exists for qualifying professionals; consult a Portuguese tax adviser.

Frequently asked questions

What income do I need for Portugal's D8 Visa?

Portugal's D8 Digital Nomad Visa requires a minimum monthly income of 3,480 EUR (4 times the Portuguese minimum wage). This threshold applies to the principal applicant. We advise on income documentation during onboarding.

What is Portugal's tax regime for new residents?

The original NHR (Non-Habitual Resident) regime closed to new applicants at end of 2023. A successor programme IFICI (also called NHR 2.0) launched in 2024 and targets qualifying high-value professionals and entrepreneurs. Eligibility assessment and application require a licensed Portuguese tax adviser - we connect you with one.

How long does the D8 visa process take?

The Portuguese consular stage typically takes 4-8 weeks for appointment scheduling, plus a further 2-4 weeks for processing after submission. We advise on booking consular appointments early and managing the process end to end.

Can I bring my family to Portugal on the D8?

Yes. Spouses and dependent children can apply for accompanying family reunification visas alongside the D8 principal applicant. Income thresholds increase for family applications. We include family application guidance in our service.
